Advice for first-time app builders from Elizabeth Scillian (@IFIOgirl), founder and CEO of IFIO Girl LLC:
Keep asking questions, push through the mistakes, and learn from them “so you don’t continue to put whitespace after links.” (That’s a story for another clip)
She built her first app, Pour Recall, on Adalo with no coding background, and it’s now live on the App Store and Google Play
Dilon, this one’s for you! You’re the one who actually found those white spaces and got me across the finish line with Apple’s review. I would still be stuck without your help. Thank you for everything you’ve done to support me building Pour Recall!
I have been working on integrating AI into my app - scan a wine label and fill in the name and select a wine type. Today I was successful - OpenAI filled in the name and selected the type white. I still need to work on how I want it to look on the screen but having it work inside my already published app was a huge wine, ha I mean win. Liz
I have success pitching at the time & place of the problem. Maybe it will work for you.
As you pointed out on your website, time & place is key:
that exact moment: standing in the grocery aisle, bottle in hand, trying to remember if it was the good one.
I would pitch there, in the wine isle. I would even start the conversation with a sly pitch, “Do you remember which one is good? …I just built an app that does that…”
(hand them your phone to test, people are more comfortable with this, usually).
Give them a quick task to do on your app.
I wouldn’t say or sell, much more than that - let them lead the conversation.
