Meet Elizabeth: At 60, she built her own wine journal app on Adalo

Elizabeth Scillian (@IFIOgirl), founder and CEO of IFIO Girl LLC, was in the wine aisle at Trader Joe’s asking herself two questions: “Have I bought this one before?” and “And if I did buy it, did I like it?”

“And that’s the moment I thought, why is there not an app for that?”

She came home, told her husband there needed to be an app for this, and then built it herself on Adalo. It’s called Pour Recall, a simple journal for logging the wines she liked and the ones she didn’t.

On a later trip to Trader Joe’s, it paid off. She searched her list right there in the store and found the wine with a thumbs up next to it. In her words: “Huh, I’ve had it and I liked it. Oh, okay. This is working.”

She built Pour Recall at 60, and it’s now live on the App Store and Google Play.

Hi Elizabeth, nice app, very clean. I’ve referred it to my little group of friends who I reckon would benefit from it as they are wine folk, I’m a beer man myself. I’ve just went 65 (retired 3 years) and I’ve been using Adalo for about 2 years and I’m enjoying learning and working out how to make stuff work. It’s the old thing, keeping the brain learning. Cheers, Jim.

Dilon, thank you so much for this! Adalo’s support has honestly been incredible for me. I started as a completely basic learner with no coding background, and I’m still learning today. This app has been a real journey, and I’m still actively working on new features. Grateful for this community! See you all soon in community support with all my questions - ha.:wine_glass:

Jimmy,

Thanks for sharing the app. Keep learning new skills and working out the brain.

Dilon. I have been working with Claude to insert some code into the “ask OpenAI” to look at a image/wine label and read the label. I just tested it to only give me the of the name of the wine and :drum: IT WORKED!!! OpenAI looked at the image and gave me a correct answer!!! I always celebrate small wins but this is a big win! This is something I always wanted this in my app. woo hoo.

After lots of ERROR- human, AI will read the wine name and the type. This was not easy and not sure I did it correctly because at the end of the day I could only make it work using two API calls, one for the name and one for the wine type. If I used one API call putting both wine name and type together I would lose some of the personalization within the app which I don’t want to lose.

Next, I will need to get this action working inside my current app and not just on the test screen I created in the app. Were there tears involved figuring this out? No. but if there were, it would have been totally appropriate…

If someone has figured out a way to split one response into two fields I would like to know how.
