I am having trouble hiding the list in the conversation page
of the chat app template which I’m using … i want users only to show up when i
manually write their name

Welcome to the community 
So you want to display a search box and then display the list based on the entered value in the search box but if the search box is empty ( means that user didn’t typed anything yet ) you don’t need to display all users?

You can add a visibility condition the list like Input > is not equal to > empty!
