Can I limit the viewable characters of a field? For example, I want to show a description of a product but only allow ~140 characters to be seen with a “…read more” link to expand the description. Is this possible? If not is there a good workaround that anyone has come up with?
This is currently not possible. There is a similar feature request here: Limit the Character in form field | Voters | Adalo that you could add your use case to as a comment there.
