Display User Photo in top Nav Bar

I’m trying to display a photo of the logged in user in the top nav bar but it isn’t working.

I can get it to work anywhere except the nav bar. Is there a way to do this within the nav bar itself with an image instead of an icon?

Group the app bar and image together then fix it to the top.
