Does anyone know how Apps like Gridwise and Obi setup a connection to users Uber and Lyft Accounts

Most probably, with the API 
Quick search shows that Uber and Lyft offer APIs to work with their platform. See here https://developer.uber.com/docs/riders/ride-requests/tutorials/api/introduction, for Lyft there is a link on the bottom of the page (goes to authorization).
