Help with the nested variable options associated with Components and Actions!

Hi All. I’m trying to implement an app in Adalo and have some questions related to setting up the database, or more specifically after I do set it up, what all the apparently subtle differences are in menu options for variables associated with Components, e.g., in a List’s ‘filter’ or ‘action’? I’ve watched Patrick Ford’s videos related to this and other videos about setting up databases and still cannot figure this out.

See more detail and questions below. I’ve also put a more detailed version of this post and PICTURES in this Gdoc: Adalo DB and Menu Q's - Google Docs

To me, everything else in Adalo seems pretty straightforward (at least so far) and they have an amazing product, but I’d guess they’re losing a ton of adoption and market traction over this confusing issue and should somehow address it more broadly.

Thank you!

This is the gist of the app. The user types in a problem they want OpenAI to solve, selects an ideation approach OpenAI should apply to this problem (e.g., “Brainstorm solutions related to a random object you generate.”),and taps ‘Go’ which returns the answer from OpenAI. Then they can add the record to their catalog of ideas.

(In case you’re wondering, I’ve gotten the Approaches to populate and get incorporated into the OpenAI input a couple of times. I’m not sure why it’s not doing it right now, but that’s not my question at hand.)

My Questions relate to the below:

Here is my Database: (more pics in the Gdoc)

Here are options in various component dropdowns that I find baffling, using this List as an example:

  1. Have I set up the database wrong, and if so then how?
  2. If I set it up correctly, then how are all of these options different?
I’m trying hard to understand the mental model that underlies these to know which to pick when!!
    a. Current Approach
    b. Current Approach: Idea (Approach (in Idea))’s > nested lists
    c. Current Idea > User (in Idea)
    d. Current Idea > Approach (in Idea)
    e. Logged in User
  3. I assume these nested lists aren’t a bug, but if they are and are hard to fix, it’d be helpful to understand why because that would shed some light on the underlying structure of the system to be able to more easily work with it.
