I want to show the my work in progress to friends and family and I am not ready yet to upgrade to the paid tier. Is this possible?

Welcome to the community 
You can share your app as a PWA before upgrading and publishing! In your Editor click on the Share button and then you can send the App URL to everyone!
You will see the Share information after clicking that button and in the new screen!
