Responsive Builder Success

I just need to know if anyone in this community has built and released a Responsive (Desk/Tab/Mob) version of the app.

Last year, I endeavored to rebuild our mobile only app in this responsive builder and I got that done after many many many hours of frustration and agony with the builder. All of that culminated in releasing a test version of the app only to have a major issue with the side navigation. I wanted a side nav across all screen sizes but it was always off set 30px down from the top in testing, but never in the app previewer.

Adalo has told me there was an update to the element, so now I’m having to go back and essentially rebuild my app to utilize the correct nav element. In doing so, I’m having to move once working components now and I’m about to lose my mind with having to rebuild everything across the responsive screens.

I just need to know if anyone else has had success with this builder or if I should just abandon this build altogether.

Hi Chris @vhbingham,

Sorry to hear that you’re experiencing problems with new builder. You’re not alone.

Just my 2 cents:

  • did I had success building the responsive app? I’d say yes
  • was it easy? No, it was a pain
  • did I use side nav or other new navs? No

In my experience, responsive builder works ok with relatively simple screens. But when you start creating something complex, it becomes a nightmare: elements suddenly jumping from their positions, group changing their alignment and size unexpectedly, unpredictable behaviour when resetting layouts, inconsistent views in the builder and in the preview, etc etc etc. Also it is difficult to reproduce all these bugs and get a pattern to avoid.

I finally came to the approach that I create same layouts for mobile / tablet / desktop, just adjusting the scalability (like on mobile group width is flexible, but for tablet / desktop it is fixed). Not perfect, but works. Also I check the scalability of each element inside the group (for example so that button is fixed in width and aligned properly). That said, complex layouts still require significant effort.

Hope this helps and also that others share their experiences!

Best,
Victor.

Thanks @Victor I have been through a bunch of that headache as well. Good to know that there is some success to be had.

I just finished changing out all of my Nav items from the original one (that didn’t work) to a new one that I hope works. I’m about to put it into live testing.
