Unauthorized Error When Creating Conversations

Hi Adalo team,

I’m running into a serious issue with the Conversations and Messages feature in my app (BarangayMo).

  • Previously, everything was working fine — users could start chats, open conversations, and send messages without problems.

  • Recently, when a user tries to open a chat, the screen sometimes shows an “Unauthorized” error.

  • Permissions for both Conversations and Messages are already set so that everyone can view, update, and delete.

  • This issue did not exist before, which makes it even more concerning.

Hello @jazcap29, Just to confirm, the error is occurring when opening the conversation screen or when clicking on a button? Also, if you can share a screenshot please of the actions in the screen.

Is there any unwanted or added by mistake, screen action in the opening screen or action when clicking on a conversation in the list? If you can share some more details of your setup along with some screenshots or a screen recording, that would helps us a lot to identify the issue.

If collection permissions is all set nicely to access for everyone, try this and let me know! : Go to Profile screen in your app > Logout (if your app doesn’t have a profile screen yet, just link a button to a new screen > add a text component in that screen > map logged in user’s email from magic text > add a button in that screen > add the logout action into the button which can be found in More… → User Login → Log Out > add a link action into the button to go to the login screen) > Login back and re-test with the same process as before to check if the issue is still there.

If it’s still same, try deleting the M:M ‘Users/Members’ relationship in the conversations collection or deleting the conversations collection and re-adding the relationship or the collection! If any of those don’t work, sometimes cloning the app does fix this issue.
