Trouble with webapp DNS

For some reason my website wont link to adalo.

I dont know what I am doing wrong… I have tried to follow other case studies i found on here with similar problems… any ideas?

Hey there, I am not entirely sure, where you wanna go with the thing, but here is two things to consider:

The the 2nd and 3rd entry name is not a valid domain. Entry number 4 has adalo and hosting swapped.

Did you setup the external domain in the Settings of your app corectly?

That was me trying anything i could to get it to work… i just cant figure it out.

for example…

this is what i have done in the Adalo app…

This is weird indeed. Sorry, but to me these settings seem alright.

Thats what I thought! I have no idea what to do.

I’m afraid DNS is not my speciality but @Victor is very knowledgeable on this and also @vancewong has answered questions about this in the past. Perhaps they may have the answer here.

Hi @njf,

As I see the DNS setup is not correct.
In your second screenshot:

See here:
$ nslookup bestcontest.co.uk.bestcontest.co.uk
Server: 192.168.0.1
Address: 192.168.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
bestcontest.co.uk.bestcontest.co.uk canonical name = hosting.adalo.com.
Name: hosting.adalo.com
Address: 54.224.90.229

$ nslookup www.bestcontest.co.uk.bestcontest.co.uk
Server: 192.168.0.1
Address: 192.168.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
www.bestcontest.co.uk.bestcontest.co.uk canonical name = hosting.adalo.com.
Name: hosting.adalo.com
Address: 54.224.90.229

Other records are not related to the subject.

So what you need to do is to delete 2nd and 4th rows (these loooong names). And add a CNAME record, so that in Name you have the subdomain name (like app) and in Value you have hosting.adalo.com. As a result you’ll have something like:

CNAME app hosting.adalo.com

If you’d like to have records for bestcontest.co.uk itself, then you need to delete A record in a 1st row, and create CNAME record, where you put @ in a Name and hosting.adalo.com in Value. The record should become available in 10 minutes (=600 seconds).

When all is set in GoDaddy, and domain is available, you can set up the subdomain in Adalo itself.

Hope this helps

Victor

I followed your instructions, and i tried this before. however now i hit this road block

@Victor on adalo it just tests the setup for ages and doesnt do anything

Hi @njf,

Reg. your domain manager picture - that’s interesting. It doesn’t allow to put a simple @ into the “Host” field?
According to the DNS standards, it is acceptable. [UPD - no, see below]. Strange that GoDaddy restricts this. If that’s true, then you’ll have to use something like app.bestcontest.co.uk: add a record of type CNAME, host app which points to hosting.adalo.com.

As soon as DNS is set up, Adalo set up could be completed.

@Victor i wondered if i could have a quick phone call with you to go through this? I still havent figured it out yet even after calling GoDaddy…

Hi @njf,

DM-ed, let’s talk

Best,
Victor

Upd: it seems that standards somehow forbid to have CNAME for root domain. There is a good overview article here:

and a discussion here:

Posting it here so that future readers have the reference
